Serviio is a freewaremedia server designed to let users stream music, video or image files to DLNA compliant televisions, game consoles, Blu-ray players, games console and Android or Windows Mobile devices on a home network.[2]
For home users looking to stream their personal connections over a local network, Serviio is a great choice. Android users can download ServiiDroid, which provides access to the Serviio console on Android devices (and more importantly does not require Pro). It is a number one DLNA streaming app available for Android device. It lets you stream and broadcast your content directly from your device to your compatible DLNA HDTV or other devices. It also works with UPnP/DLNA media servers, cloud media storage, and even media from web browsers and file managers. Then I can enter that in Serviio and I can play the stream over the LAN on any DLNA device. Serviio also supports rtp and rtsp streams, though I haven't tried it yet. I tried putting in a Custom Live Stream FMS URL like rtmp://127.0.0.1/test.ts and also tried using the local file output to add to Serviio, but neither worked. The Roku is a streaming boxand not much else. There's no hard drive space onboard for your personal videos, and most models don't even have a USB port for external drives. But that doesn't mean you can't play your own videos, listen to your own music, or browse your photo collection.
Overview[edit]
The free version of Serviio will stream media within a home network to connected TVs, Blu-ray players, set-top boxes, the Sony PS3 and Microsoft Xbox 360. Since it is DLNA compliant, it will stream supported devices on the same network. Serviio also has a 'Pro' license for $25 that will allow users to access their libraries outside the home. This license also enables dynamic transcoding to convert higher bit rate video or audio files into lower bit rate formats to permit viewing on slower broadband connections.[2] Another paid feature is 'media browser' that allows users to stream content to a web browser (desktop or mobile) at home or on the go.[3]
Pro Applications[edit]
The Pro license permits users to stream to third party applications for Android and Windows devices at home or on another network. In addition, users can use the server to watch online content including live TV or RSS feeds.[2]
Supported media formats[edit]
The server can read and if required transcode several media types for playback.[4]
